Independence Day As A Child.

Celebrating Merdeka was something else back then. The campaigns, passionate (or just loud) singing of anthems, & competitions.

Oh, to be a part of one of the contests. It was the only month, where students could showcase their creativity and designs. A month where future designers, artists, writers, poets, inventors& decorators could shine.

I feel like most of us took part in the ever so common contest — the colouring/drawing contest, more popularly known as “poster competition.” The winner gets either candy or validated (lol) by exhibiting their art in the common areas. I’ve seen some of my friends turn into interior designers when it came to class decorations, and they did not mess around. Every corner was covered with red, yellow, blue, and white. The best part was receiving flags with candy (you know the round ones) and we had to wave those flags every time during assembly. *cue Keranamu, Jalur Gemilang, Tanggal 31*

Did anyone else’s school organize a drama show that had some valuable lessons by the end? Actors, Youtubers & Tik Tokers in the making! It became an extra special drama show when your friends are performing.

Here’s my favourite, the writing contests. Write an essay (‘karangan’) describing how would you celebrate Merdeka when you’re older. Back then, I used to write about how we should decorate our homes or celebrate with friends & family to highlight our patriotism. Good enough for an essay, but we all know that’s not real.

The reality is, we used to dread the month of August, and why shouldn’t we? It was forced patriotism, contest participation, parades, & guilt trips. Now, I am not a super patriotic person but I believe that month, has allowed us to tap into our creative sides. In a place where Science & Mathematics were upheld, August gave everyone a break.

I’ve grown up, and I have never done anything I’ve stated in my essays. That doesn’t make me any less of a Malaysian; because most of us are fighting for justice, speaking up for the voiceless, supporting local businesses, & standing united despite the pandemic. And, guess what, we still use art, words & voice to show our passion towards our nation. Happy Independence Day.
